A Social Housing Provider is being called upon to take action against tenants storing caravans on their driveways after a recent fire caused substantial damage to two Hartlepool homes.
The properties in Otterpool Close, on Hartlepool's crime ridden Central Estate that were damaged recently when a caravan caught fire.
Two properties in the towns Otterpool Close suffered significant external fire damage just after 4am on the 30th December 2022, the fire believed to have started in a caravan parked on a driveway caused significant damage to the kitchen & bedroom of one property, & damaging the guttering & UPVC windows of the property next door.
It comes as concerns over the number of suspected arson attacks on the troubled estate is promoting calls for landlords Thirteen Housing Group Ltd to ban the storage of caravans on driveways owned by the social landlord, following a repair bill that’s likely to run into thousands of pounds to fix both homes which were damaged by the fire.
Caravans are reported to be generally “safe” to be stored on premises, however the issue then comes if combustible's such as gas bottles are not securely stored away from potential ignition sources, with some ageing caravans seemingly becoming a magnet for crime & anti social behaviour to occur.
In the summer, a former Nursing Home just yards away from the troubled Central Estate was the target of a suspected arson attack.
Whilst the latest incident hasn't been officially ruled as an arson attack by Cleveland fire brigade, Just last year, the number of reported arson attacks to properties & nearby derelict buildings in the area that the force was called out to on the crime ridden estate had reportedly increased significantly, promoting calls for Cleveland Police & landlords Thirteen Housing to start & take a firmer stance on tenants on the troubled estate when it was discovered that Hartlepool’s Central Estate, which primarily consists of homes managed by the controversial Teesside private landlord had not had a permanent housing officer managing the area since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to claims the estate then quickly fell into significant problems with drug dealing, unruly tenants & Anti Social Behaviour.
Landlords Thirteen could potentially now ask for tenants to remove any caravans parked on driveways or face them being seized & removed due to safety concerns
There a popular item for holidaymakers, however there's increasing concerns over them being stored so close to homes in areas where arson attacks are on the increase.
Its prompting claims that landlords Thirteen could be set to undertake a review of arrangements for the allowing of tenants to store items such as caravans on premises owned by the Teesside Landlord with the landlords asking tenants to consider moving such items into licenced storage facilities or potentially face the prospect of them being removed by the landlords themselves in order to ensure that they potentially don't cause further damage to homes in the area.
