A conservative MP is facing calls to step down after a social media tweet to a Labour Activist spectacularly backfired, when the MP claimed she was "orange with rage" when she published a photograph of a Christmas card allegedly sent to her boyfriend from Hartlepool Conservative MP Jill Mortimer.
Conservative MP Brendan Clarke Smith's been heavily criticised on social media for his Boxing Day tweet to the Labour Party Campaigner that claimed she was "orange with rage" when she discovered the Christmas Card at her boyfriends family home, sparking a critical backlash on social media.
The tweet by the Labour Party campaigner reached over five million people online
Lauren Howells, a Labour Party campaigner from Hartlepool tweeted that her Christmas was “ruined” when she'd found a Christmas Card from Hartlepool Conservative MP Jill Mortimer at her boyfriends home.
The tweet Ms Howells posted said : “Just found this on the shelf in boyfriend’s family home, Christmas ruined.”
Conservative MP Brendan Clarke-Smith is facing calls to step down from his role over the offensive tweet
It then led to a response on Boxing Day from Conservative MP for Bassetlaw & Parliamentary Secretary Brendan Clarke Smith saying Howells was “orange with rage” in what's been claimed to have been a personal attack on her appearance, with many saying the tweet sent by Mr Clarke-Smith was simply “misogynistic” & "a step too far"..
In response to the remarks made by the Conservative MP to the local Labour party activist Ms Howells said “From an actual Tory MP. It’s clearly a joke mate, misogyny isn’t.”
She also responded by saying “The amount of tweets about my appearance and assumed intelligence I see from the little hard right misogynistic hate cult really does make me laugh. The left clearly aren’t the intolerant ones.”
One twitter follower posted "In what kind of civilised society does an elected representative make fun of a young lady’s appearance because she made a joke about a Christmas card?"
Lee Anderson MP come out to defend Mr Clarke Smiths tweet
But Conservative MP Lee Anderson went so far as to defend the tweet posted by Mr Clarke-Smith saying "Imagine having your Christmas ruined by a card. And then sharing it on FB looking for sympathy. Is this what they mean by 'snowflakes'" ?
Ms Howells made it clear that her tweet about the Christmas card was simply “a joke” posting “I feel like I should take this opportunity to confirm that this is a joke and my Christmas was not actually ruined by a Christmas card from my MP at my boyfriend’s house… immediately obvious to most but clearly not to some”
But there's increasing calls for Conservative MP Brendan Clarke Smith to issue an apology to the Labour Party campaigner or potentially face further calls to stand down over the matter, in what many claim was a social media tweet made in bad taste that ultimately backfired on the tory MP.
However when it comes to campaigns on social media its been claimed that Ms Howells has herself been "no angel" when it comes to her activities online, following claims just months ago that she orchestrated a campaign on social media to allegedly pile pressure on a local elected councillor previously convicted of assault in an attempt to force the local councillor to stand down from his role.
In what's been described as a relentless mission of social media "trolling", Ms Howells & a number of others reportedly embarked on an alleged "smear campaign" against the local councillor calling him "a woman abuser" & claiming Conservative party members in Hartlepool were fully aware of his conviction for assault, something the chairman of the local Conservatives has always vehemently denied.
It was allegedly said that activists for the Labour Party were looking to force the Hartlepool Councillor to stand down in the hopes that the increased pressure against the him on social media would cause the local member of the council to "crack" & stand down from his role forcing a by-election in the ward.
The Hartlepool Councillor claimed that the actions of Ms Howells & the trolling campaign allegedly "drove him to the brink of suicide".
Whilst Labour goes on & on about women's rights, its completely ignored the fact one of its own MP's was "the worst of the worst" when it come to predators.
Ms Howells has strongly campaigned for better legislation for the protection of women in roles within parliament & local government, however many have come to criticize her campaign as hypocritical, considering just three years ago, Labours then MP for Hartlepool Mike Hill was accused of a relentless campaign of abuse against a female member of his staff, which in turn led to several party members & even Labour MP's closing ranks to defend the towns Labour MP, orchestrating their own campaign of Harassment against Mike Hills victim, who through steely determination & dedication managed to see the MP for Hartlepool eventually resign in disgrace, leading to an Employment Tribunal hearing which not only revealed the lengths the Labour Party would go to "silence" those who were victims of sexual assault, but also the lengths they would go to ensure those who dared to speak about about it were "dealt with" by Labours henchmen.
